Favourites: Factory 20

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

We’re always searching for favorites.  This Weeks: Washington’s Factory 20.  Like, seriously, we can’t get enough of the creative and inspiring collection of furniture, lighting and accessories…..particularly because it’s SO well catalogued,  with both photographs and descriptions. A few of our fav’s: the 1940’s Music Dept. chairs and Wall Mount Wardrobe Coat Rack.

Reclaiming salvaged materials, using uncommon combinations and adhering to modernist tenets, it’s ALL unexpected and definitely unforgettable.

Cobonpue’s Croissant isn’t the only thing we want to Gobble Up…

Monday, December 14th, 2009

School and apprenticeships in the late 80’s aside, Cobonpue returned to his home town of Cebu (Philippines) in 1999.  Working alongside his mom, Betty, a well-known rattan designer, he took the helm of the family operation Interior Craft of the Islands, founded in the early 70s. With a desire to modernize natural fibres and materials, he began integrating locally sourced organicincluding bamboo, abaca, buri and rattan with unique hand-made production techniques.  Need we say more… take a look yourself.

Meet the Crossaint – so deliciously inviting, we can’t help ourselves.  With waterproof outdoor fabric, it’s entrenched in a hand-sculpted frame of light steel bound by strands of abaca rope.

Featured in upteem magazines, benefactor of an equal amount of awards and personally requested by the likes of the Hollywood A-list, his cunning and groundbreaking designs continue to provide that  lightweight, transparent and contemporary feel.

Where can you find this Filipino craftsman?  Let’s just say it’s word the trip:  DC, Aguas Santas (ahem Portugal) and Cebu City, Philippines.  Failing a ‘flight’ problem, you can check the distirubtion network of 31 countries – Canadians check YYZ and YUL.

Looks Can Be Deceiving

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Are you constantly trying to find extra space for all of your extra stuff? Finding more storage space in every room of your house can be easier than you think. “More and more furniture companies are gearing towards the small condo consumers. This is great for all of us that have small spaces. Each room can have plenty of hidden storage options,” says interior designer Alicia Sass, of Cary Mudford Interior Design.

We asked Alycia to give us few ideas on how to create more space in small rooms. Here are her tips:

In the Kitchen

·        Kitchen companies now offer in-drawer organization units. This keeps everything organized making more room for items even in the junk drawer.

·        Creating a corner built-in bench around a small table is a great way to have storage. Make the tops flip up to reveal storage.

In the Bathroom

·         Free standing towers are great for storing the small items like toothpaste, nail polish, etc. Most are only 12”x12” and are great for a corner.

·         If you want a spa-like feel there are plenty of small cube benches out there. Most offer a towel padded seat that lifts off to store items inside. They are mostly made of wood planks that are safe to be in moist conditions.

In the Living Room

·         Most have flip tops that can also act as serving trays. You can have the serving tray side exposed for a coffee table or end table look and when guests come over you can flip them over to the padded side to offer more seating. Everything from extra blankets to books can be stored inside.

·         Open shelving is great to display minimal items but having a closed TV stand can be your saviour. You can store anything from DVD’s and your equipment, to books and magazines without it looking messy.  Storage cubes are great for small spaces. (We love these ones from West Elm.)

In the Bedroom

·         Most companies now offer beds with storage drawers built-in underneath. This is great for shoes, blankets, pillows etc.

·         Beds are now available that look completely closed at the bottom but the mattress lifts up to expose complete hidden storage. These beds can look quite heavy so if you want to keep your bed off the floor you can get storage baskets that slide under the box spring. They are easy to access when something is needed from them.

In the Closets

·         Everyone knows about the great closet organization units available for clothes but everyone forgets about organization for the small things. It’s important to have some place for rings, bracelets etc, so that things don’t pile up on your dresser. If you don’t have a large closet, having a big bowl on your dresser that all your jewellery can go in can be a good way to have it all in one place and not hanging off your mirror.
